Limnophila aromatica (Hippuridoides)
Family: Plantaginaceae
Type: Aquatic stem plant (mid-ground to background)
Origin: Southeast Asia
Description:
Limnophila aromatica (also known as Hippuridoides) is a highly decorative aquatic stem plant, admired for its elongated, narrow leaves that develop a graceful, whorled pattern around the stem. Under strong lighting, the leaves display vivid shades of green, bronze, and purple, creating a striking visual contrast in aquascapes. When grown above water (emersed), the plant releases a distinctive herbal aroma, which inspired its name.
Growth & Placement:
This plant grows upright and fast under stable conditions, making it ideal for mid to background placement. Regular trimming encourages bushy growth and prevents shading.
Ideal Water & Lighting Conditions:
- Light: Medium to high light is required for best color expression.
- CO₂: Strongly recommended for compact, vibrant growth.
- Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or regular liquid fertilization.
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.2)
Care Notes:
High light + CO₂ + consistent nutrients = best color development. In low light, the plant may elongate and lose its intense coloration.
Use in Aquascaping:
- Dutch-style aquascapes
- Nature aquariums as a color and texture contrast
- Background accent to frame hardscape elements
